Basement bulkhead doors were first implemented in the 1920's then the metal bulkhead door became the go-to style of doors. The metal doors have no insulation and allow the cold outdoor temperature to transfer into the basement making it uncomfortable, damp and expensive to heat.
Many people have tried to insulate the steel doors with various degrees of success after lots of time, money and effort. When the warmer basement air reaches the colder metal doors it forms condensation which collects as water on and around the stairs causing rust, corrosion, bad smells and mold. This water is sometimes mistaken as a leaky basement when actually it's condensation. This moisture could shorten the life of the steel doors and cause the cement stairs to pull away from the foundation. This is also the case when there is a secondary basement door which causes the entire bulkhead and cement stairs to be a much colder temperature than the basement.
In the winter when walking by the bulkhead doors you can feel the cold, damp air coming in. Some home builders actually install a floor drain at the base of the stairs. We'd suggest stopping the condensation at it's source.
Until now there has never been an insulation method that was effective, easy to install and remove, very lightweight, no tools or drilling required, safe for the foundation/stairs and doors, looks incredible while being affordable.
